MPs sign letter to Claire Coutinho calling for renewable liquid fuel support

24 MPs have signed an open letter to Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero The Rt Hon Claire Coutinho MP, calling for the government to give off-grid households the choice of switching to a renewable liquid fuel so they can decarbonise their heating in a practical and affordable way.

The chancellor could achieve a quick win amongst rural voters by scrapping the tax on renewable liquid heating fuels in his upcoming budget.

The findings from a three year project which saw over a hundred oil heated properties convert to Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) have been published, as the liquid fuel heating industry calls for a wider rollout to deliver affordable decarbonisation for off-grid homes.

In response to growing pressure from rural homeowners and backbench MPs, the Prime Minister recently announced the proposed ban on the installation of new oil boilers in 2026 would be pushed back until 2035.

The Chancellor is being urged to show he is on the side of off-grid homes and businesses by equalising the duty on renewable liquid fuels with that of kerosene when used for home heating in his upcoming Autumn Statement (22 Nov) to align with the equal treatment of the fuels when used in transportation.

The Prime Minister recently outlined his approach to achieving net zero in a landmark speech. The government must now follow through with its promise to put fairness and choice at the heart of its plans for off-grid homes, which includes the option of switching to a renewable liquid fuel…
