Labour MPs urge Minister for Energy Consumers to back renewable liquid fuels

Labour MPs have written to the new Minister for Energy Consumers, Martin McCluskey MP,  at the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero calling for the government to support a renewable liquid fuel solution for oil heated homes in its upcoming Warm Homes Plan.

The letter outlined a need to recognise the specific challenges oil heated households face and for the Warm Homes Plan to make specific recommendations on how they can decarbonise fairly, effectively and affordably.

Oil heated households face unique and specific issues due to their rural location, age and method of construction, making them some of the hardest and most expensive homes to decarbonise.

The letter outlines four key recommendations: recognise this challenge, adopt a technology neutral approach, have a consistent policy with the devolved and Irish governments, and consult on a market mechanism for renewable liquid fuels by implementing Section 159 of the Energy Act 2023 and equalising the duty rate with heating oil which will lower costs for consumers.

We will continue to work proactively and positively with the government to deliver a renewable liquid fuel heating solution for the UK’s 1.7 million oil heated properties.
